In Bulgaria, concrete steps are being taken towards the implementation of the Green City philosophy. Recently, the Bulgarian edition of the international Green City website has been launched. Furtermore, the Dutch Green City experience will be shared with Bulgarian colleagues and authorities at the ‘Greenfest’ Sofia on 29-31 May in Sofia.
At a conference, organised in the context of Greenfest, Bulgarian minister of Regional Development Ms Lilyana Pavlova, EU permanent representative Ognian Zlatev and the Dutch ambassador in Bulgaria mr Tom van Oorschot will give the opening speeches. Leon Smet, representing iVerde, will present the philosophy behind the Dutch ‘Green City’ concept, with practical examples of the positive effects in reducing nuisance of dust and noise. Also, the Dutch perennial grower Bert Griffioen will speak about the practical application of green projects in the urban environment.
Bulgarian municipal authorities such as Bourgas and Varna will present their efforts and plan for the greening of their cities. Two Bulgarian organisations ‘Union of Landscape Architects of Bulgaria (ULAB) en ‘Bulgarian Association of Ornamental Plants Nurseries’ (BAOPN) recently decided to join forces. The iVerde foundation provided the Bulgarian colleagues with knowledge on the Green City philosophy. This formed the base of the cooperation between these two Bulgarian ‘green’ organisations.
‘Greenfest Sofia’ and the conference, which takes place in the Mussala Hall of the Hilton Hotel in Sofia, are organised by the Union of Landscape Architects in Bulgaria, the Association of Ornamental Plants Nurseries and the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Sofia.
