The European Commission has announced the names of the four shortlisted cities competing to be European Green Capital in 2017. They are Essen (Germany), ‘s-Hertogenbosch (the Netherlands), Nijmegen (the Netherlands) and Umea (Sweden).
The EGC Award was launched in 2010 to recognise outstanding examples of green urban planning and encourage pioneering cities with populations of more than 100.000 to share their best practices with others. ‘It is encouraging to see the calibre of these applications,’ said EU Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella. ‘The Award showcases the local efforts to improve the urban environment and promotoe sustainable growth.’
The winner will be announced at an award ceremony in Bristol, UK, the 2015 Green Capital, on 18 June 2015.
